This discussion paper focuses on the impacts of war in Ukraine on the peace processes of the South Caucasus, a region fractured by protracted conflicts dating back to the 1990s.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shattered Europe\u2019s security architecture, with far-reaching and unpredictable implications for conflicts in neighbouring regions where Russia plays a role.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rc-services-assets.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/s3fs-public\/Under_the_Pall_of_War.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This discussion paper<\/a> examines how diminished perceptions of Russia as a security actor and the decline of multilateral mediation infrastructure have left a dangerous security vacuum in the South Caucasus. It identifies three dynamics that can fill this vacuum: the European Union\u2019 evolution into a direct mediation role, proposals for new regional formats and new bilateral dynamics among some of the region\u2019s conflicting parties. <\/p>\n\n<p>War in Ukraine has also further highlighted the importance of the South Caucasus as a transit zone.
