Johannes Varwick hat lange für Entspannungspolitik geworben. Seinen Ansatz hält er nicht für gescheitert, Sanktionen für wirkungslos. Er appelliert, nicht in Extrempositionen zu denken, sondern nüchtern zu schauen, was in der jetzigen Situation getan werden kann.

taz: Herr Varwick, in den vergangenen Wochen haben Sie Zugeständnisse gegenüber Russland gefordert. In einem Aufruf unter dem Titel „Raus aus der Eskalationsspirale“ warben Sie für Entspannung. Lagen Sie falsch?

Johannes Varwick: Auch wenn jetzt alles dafür spricht, dass mit Putin kein Interessenausgleich möglich war, war der Versuch durchaus vernünftig. Der Westen hätte die Frage der Nato-Mitgliedschaft der Ukraine klarer ausschließen müssen. Versäumnisse gibt es auf allen Seiten und im Ergebnis sehen wir ein Versagen der Diplomatie.
