How can peacebuilding address disinformation? Tessa Schindler explores this timely question in a blog post. She builds on a recent study which was commissioned by the Berghof Foundation as well as the Platform Peaceful Conflict Transformation (PZKB) – and enabled by a FriEnt grant.

“How can we build a digital future that promotes truth and understanding instead of division and harm?“

The Berghof Foundation, in collaboration with the Platform Peaceful Conflict Transformation, recently commissioned a study on Peacebuilding and disinformation that tries to answer this question; it focuses on how peacebuilding can address disinformation. More than just false or misleading information, disinformation is defined as information shared with the intent to harm. Therefore, focusing on technology is not enough to address the issue. An effective response must also consider the human drivers behind disinformation and unite various disciplines.

In her blog post, Tessa Schindler also challenges us to move beyond reactionary measures (such as attempts to modify existing platforms). Moreover, we should try to imagine a digital future with platforms that promote transparency and understanding – working towards long-term strategies that promote a more informed and cohesive society. “As digital spaces become increasingly influenced by disinformation, peacebuilders play a crucial role in shaping a more informed online (and offline) world,“ she argues.
